Dawn Iler (b. 1986) is a Canadian-born analogue artist focusing on raw, emotive, and fleeting beauty. Since childhood, Dawn recalls often having a disposable camera on hand. In addition to using a mix of medium format, 35 mm, and instant films, Dawn uses expired and experimental film. With the experience of being on both sides of the camera, Dawn has developed a unique perspective that allows for transformative healing through creating. Dawn’s appreciation for the complexities of the human body have been expanded by their education in both women’s, gender, sexuality studies and massage therapy. By creating a comfortable and empowering environment for all bodies, in which the subject can transcend their own perceived limitations, Dawn honors the strength, vulnerability, and beauty of their subjects with the intention of dismantling the patriarchy and deconstructing the ‘male gaze.’ Through this process Dawn’s photography becomes a tool for healing the photographer, the subject, and the world at large.
